What is Reiki?
Reiki, meaning ‘energy of the universe’, was ‘rediscovered’ in Japan in the 1900s by Mikao Usui, who shaped it into a standardised way of using natural energy for facilitating self-healing, self-development and spiritual development.
The subtle energy directed by the Reiki process is ki - also known as chi (in China) and prana (in India). You’ll have heard of these if you practice yoga, meditation or a martial art, or if you’ve had acupuncture. A practitioner who is ‘attuned’ acts as a channel for ki, focusing its power into the client and asking that it acts in their best and highest interests.
Reiki feels positive and nurturing, whether it’s as much-needed ‘me-time’ or as a complementary therapy in conjunction with allopathic (conventional) medicine. Personally, I feel there is a divine element to it - a connection to something bigger - and some clients believe this too. Yet because Reiki is not attached to any religion or belief system, everyone can experience its benefits in alignment with their own beliefs.
What is a Reiki treatment good for?
The first thing many clients notice is that the flow of Reiki brings peace of mind and inner calm, allowing stress and anxiety to ebb away. You might feel a sense of balance, a wholeness, or an enhanced connection to both your wisdom self and the world around you.
This cleansing flow may open you to other things on an unconscious level. It’s a good time to let go of emotions and feelings that have done their job and are past their time - like grief, anger, regret. It’s not unusual for people to cry during a session - and laugh too. I’ve done both myself.
In my experience, the serenity of a Reiki session is an opportunity to set down what no longer serves you. Within this new spaciousness, clarity can arise, and perhaps a sense of your potential, a new sense of self, inspiration. It’s possible you’ll feel motivated to try new things, make changes or change direction, do that thing you’ve dreamed of, finish a creative project, solve a problem. Or you might simply feel free to immerse yourself in, and enjoy, your life as it is.
Will Reiki heal me?
Reiki is not a standalone healer, it’s a complementary therapy. If you come to me with a health issue, I will check you’re getting conventional (allopathic) treatment first and foremost.
Sadly though, Reiki is under-researched by academia. This rightly restricts how practitioners can describe its benefits - what we might otherwise report observing anecdotally lacks the necessary robust scientific evidence.
However, what we can point to is the evidence that Reiki has great potential as a complementary therapy. There is a (relatively) small but slowly mounting body of research that Reiki is a valuable and worthwhile complementary therapy.
Reiki is a safe, gentle, and profoundly relaxing healing modality… For patients with chronic health conditions, Reiki has been found to be more effective than placebo for reducing pain, anxiety, and depression, and for improving self-esteem and quality of life… due to higher parasympathetic nervous system activity… This understanding suggests that Reiki has the potential to provide valuable support for a broad range of chronic health conditions… However, there is no justification to regard Reiki as a cure for any health condition.

As a passive therapy - meaning you lie there and receive it with no effort - Reiki works with your unconscious body-mind, therefore supporting and enhancing conventional medical treatments, therapies and even self development work. It has not been shown to be harmful to anyone with a pacemaker, disease, illness, injury, or during pregnancy.
A closer examination … supports the ability of Reiki to reduce anxiety and pain, and suggests its usefulness to induce relaxation, improve fatigue, burn-out and depressive symptoms, and strengthen overall wellbeing.

What happens during a Reiki session?
- In your first session, I’ll ask about your general health and any injuries. Reiki is a safe complementary therapy but getting an overview of your history and current status is common sense. I will make a few notes, which will be treated confidentially, retained securely and according to GDPR Data Protection.
- You will be invited to lie on a massage bed, with the aid of cushions and a blanket so you’re comfortable throughout. You’ll remain fully clothed. Reiki can also be delivered while you’re seated in a chair, if this is better for you.
- I’ll place my hands on areas of your body to administer the flow of energy. These are usually areas like your brow, shoulders, upper chest, lower ribs, belly button, wrists, knees, hips, limbs and feet. I’ll discuss this with you beforehand, so I’m aware of any areas which are sensitive or no-go. Reiki can also be administered without touch, if you’re more comfortable with this.
- You are free to set an intent that you are here for a specific therapeutic outcome - for example, to have more energy, or to help you process grief or an injury, or even support the elimination of a disease. Intention is a powerful force and sending a positive desire into the universe is something I encourage. However, bear in mind that it’s not possible for any Reiki practitioner to guarantee that your intended issue will be targeted, or the outcome. Nor is Reiki an alternative to conventional medicine - it’s a complementary therapy and should not replace conventional treatment.
- I don’t make diagnoses. Sometimes I can sense tissue or bone damage, or an emotional state. I might remark on this during or afterwards, but my job is to be a conduit for free-flowing ki.
- You might feel the Reiki energy as a pleasant tingle flowing through your body - though some people don’t and this is okay. My hands might feel very hot to you, or cool. You might see colours, or have daydreams. You might feel emotional. Some people fall asleep during a session - this is fine too!
- When I’ve finished, I seal the energy in so it can continue to work for a day or more afterwards. You might feel energised - or in need of a nap. Drink plenty of water and listen to what your body needs you to do - move, rest, eat something specific, and so on.
- I recommend initially that you have an intensive course of at least three Reiki sessions across as many weeks. After this big ‘clear out’, we can agree on a maintenance plan that suits your needs.
Sessions & Bundles
- Reiki is available as a standalone session costing £40, though you can buy a bundle of 5 with a discount. If you’re having Reiki for the first time, a minimum of 3 x 1 hour sessions in 3 weeks is recommended for maximum impact, after which you can choose how often you want to top-up.
- Services for businesses & organisations are available on a bespoke retainer package with discounts applied, depending on the size of your workforce and your requirements.
- Vouchers are also available as gifts for single or multiple sessions.
- In certain circumstances, I can offer remote services.
- My services are available to adults aged 18+.
How do you know that I know my stuff?
I completed my First Degree (Shoden) in 2016, Second Degree Practitioner (Okuden) in 2019, and Reiki Master (Shinpiden) in 2026. All Masters who taught me are highly experienced and I can show you both my Western and Japanese lineage upon request.
I’ve been practising Reiki on friends, family and colleagues since qualifying as a practitioner. Gaining my Reiki Master qualification doesn’t automatically signify a higher degree of skill - it allows me to teach and attune others, empowering a new generation of Reiki practitioners. Working with the Master symbol and deepening my experience, however, has and continues to be transformative to my practice and myself.
I am insured and you can see my public liability / professional indemnity certification upon request.
Confidentiality
Naturally, sessions are confidential to the client receiving the treatment. Personal information you disclose to me will not be repeated. The only times I break confidentiality is if there is a serious welfare issue or a crime has been or will be committed.
